Meet the biggest families in Harry Potter

Potter

potter

The most important on the list, the Potters are another of the pure-blood families in the Harry Potter universe, possessing great wealth since Fleamont Potter developed the magical hair-straightening potion, which earned him a fortune in 1926.

However, the Potter family is much older, with its patriarch, Lienfred of Stinchcombe, born in the 12th century, known for his mastery of potions.

The most famous members, without a doubt, are from the last generation. Lily Evans and James Potter gave birth to the young Harry Potter, the only survivor of Voldemort's attack on the family home. Guided by Dumbledore, Snape, Lupin, Sirius and their friends, Harry defeated Voldemort and ended the Second Wizarding War, becoming possibly the greatest hero in the history of the wizarding world, at just 17 years of age.

Potter marries Ginny Weasley, with whom he has three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus and Lily Luna, in homage to the friends and teachers who fought so many times for him, including, in the case of Snape, Dumbledore and Sirius, who gave their own lives.

Weasley

weasley family

Members of the Sacred 28, the Weasleys are unlike most members of this group, because, in addition to being poor, they do not have the same prejudice as families like the Malfoys, and are frowned upon by the rest of them.

The first known Weasley is Matilda Weasley, the deputy headmistress of Hogwarts. Few details are given to us about the family, but the most important comes from Septimus Weasley, who, when he married Cedrela Black, had two sons: Arthur and Bilius Weasley. Arthur, who would later marry Molly, had seven children: Ron, Ginny, Bill, Charlie, Fred, George and Percy.

All of them, especially Ron, played an important role in the definitive downfall of Voldemort and, later, got married, continuing the family tree.

Ginny married Harry Potter, with whom she had three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus and Lily Luna, while Ron married Hermione Granger, with whom she had two children: Hugo and Rose.

The Granger family can also be briefly mentioned, as they have few roots in the wizarding world, with Hermione's own parents being Muggles. Hermione's family's wizarding roots come from her grandmother.

Gaunt

gaunt

Direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin, the Gaunts were a family known for their pure blood and extreme prejudice against half-bloods and Muggles, and were members of the Sacred 28, a select group composed only of pure-blood families in the wizarding world. Their wealth was lost, and their last generations lived in poverty, until the generation of Marvolo Gaunt, who had two children, Morfin and Merope.

Merope ended the family's "purity" by having a relationship with the Muggle nobleman, Tom Riddle, using a love potion to bewitch him. This romance bore fruit, and a baby was on the way. Marvolo and Morfin were arrested for attacking a Ministry of Magic inspector, and Tom Riddle abandoned Merope as soon as the potion's effects wore off. Alone and penniless, the last of the Gaunt lineage struggled through the streets of London, giving birth to her son, Tom Marvolo Riddle, in an orphanage, and dying shortly thereafter.

The future Lord Voldemort was the last of his generation, and shared his grandfather's prejudiced views, and maintained them until his death in the Battle of Hogwarts. Only one member of the Gaunt lineage still lives, Delfine Riddle, daughter of Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange.

Dumbledore

Unfortunately, this family has few known members, and has no living descendants after Deathly Hallows, apart from Alberforth. The oldest recorded members are Albus' parents, Percival and Kendra, whose mother ended up dying due to a loss of control over her daughter Ariana's magic, secretly an Obscurial, who in an absurd explosion of power ended up killing the witch. Ariana would cause problems again, when she was attacked by a gang of Muggles, causing her father to intervene, and he was imprisoned in Azkaban. Now, it was the responsibility of the eldest brother, Albus, to take care of his siblings, giving up a brilliant future at the Ministry of Magic, since he was the most brilliant student in the history of Hogwarts. Albus began to have a relationship with the obscure Grindewald, which led him to an argument with his brother, resulting in a duel between the three wizards, who accidentally ended up fatally striking Ariana. The death of his sister was the greatest trauma in the life of the bitter Albus, who would even consider this scene as his Bogeyman.

Despite their disagreements, Albus and Albeforth would fight side by side to overthrow Grindewald. Albus became the most powerful wizard in history and headmaster of Hogwarts, being the target of praise and criticism from the magical community until his death, while Albeforth lived a quiet life in the Hog's Head pub.

Malfoy

malfoy family

The most famous family of the Sacred 28. The Malfoys are an elite family, made up only of pure-blood wizards, born into vast wealth.

The first member of this noble family was Armand Malfoy, who lived in the 11th century, and who received his lands and wealth from King William I. Initially, the issue of relating to Muggles was not so important, as long as the Muggles had money, and so, through shady services, the Malfoys became rich through the help of wealthy Muggles. Over the years, the family became richer and more influential, until we reach Lucius and Narcissa, who gave birth to Draco Malfoy. Lucius was a Death Eater, who did not admit to being a follower of the Dark Lord, saying that he had been manipulated by the Imperius Curse; this lie, combined with his influence in the Ministry of Magic, guaranteed his freedom.

During the Second Wizarding War, the Malfoys were forced to fight alongside Voldemort, with Draco himself given the impossible mission of killing Dumbledore. After Voldemort's final fall, the family lost prestige, but was pardoned for their crimes.

Alongside Astoria, Draco gave birth to the last official member of the Malfoy family, the young Scorpius, who curiously became best friends with Albus Potter, Harry's son, the counterpart to the rivalry between his parents.

Black

black family tree

Strongly linked to the Malfoys, the Blacks have shared the elitist ideals of this family for many generations. The oldest member of the family is Cadmus Black, who lived before 1200. The most famous members of the family are, without a doubt, the brothers Sirius and Regulus Black. Sirius was completely against the sick thoughts of his family, being the only one not to be sorted into Slytherin; he was sorted into Gryffindor. His mother's displeasure was so great that his name was struck off the family tree. On the other hand, Regulus was always faithful to the family ideals, even joining Voldemort's ranks. However, upon realizing how sick the Dark Lord was, he deserted, trying to destroy his locket. However, he ended up being killed by Voldemort's Inferi, leaving the title of last Black in the hands of his brother, who was killed by his cousin, Bellatrix, in the battle of the Department of Mysteries.
