Getting Ready for Superman: Legacy (2025)

Cast and production

superman 2025

Superman: Legacy is being prepared as a "return to origins", bringing back the hopeful and colorful Superman that had been lost in the DCEU. James Gunn, known for big hits like Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad, reinforced this commitment, and all the marketing for the film was shaped around it. Check out the direction and the actors confirmed so far:

James Gunn – Writer & Director

Co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, Gunn is known for reinventing superhero properties with heart and humor (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad). In Legacy, he promises a return to a hopeful, emotionally grounded Superman, inspired heavily by All-Star Superman.

Fun fact: Gunn wrote the script before officially becoming head of DC Studios — that’s how personal this project is to him.

David Corenswet – Clark Kent / Superman

Known for: Pearl (2022), The PoliticianAn actor with classic Superman looks and a background in indie drama, Corenswet brings youth, sincerity, and vulnerability to the role. This will be his breakout as a leading man, and his casting reflects Gunn’s desire for a fresh but familiar take.

Rachel Brosnahan – Lois Lane

Known for: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Emmy winner)A charismatic and sharp actress, Brosnahan plays a fierce, fast-talking journalist — very much in line with classic Lois.Fans are excited to see her chemistry with Corenswet, which was reportedly strong during screen tests.

Nicholas Hoult – Lex Luthor

Known for: Mad Max: Fury Road, The Great, X-MenAfter previously being considered for Superman, Hoult lands the iconic villain role. Expect a modern, manipulative Lex with brains and cold ambition, rather than a cartoonish megalomaniac.

Nathan Fillion – Guy Gardner / Green Lantern

Known for: Firefly, Castle, The Suicide SquadA longtime James Gunn collaborator, Fillion plays the brash, cocky version of Green Lantern, bringing comic relief and edge to the cast.

Isabela Merced – Hawkgirl

Known for: Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Instant FamilyA rising star with action chops, Merced brings strength and energy to the warrior from Thanagar. Expect aerial combat and strong presence.

Edi Gathegi – Mister Terrific

Known for: X-Men: First Class, For All MankindPlaying one of the smartest men in the DCU, Terrific is expected to be the tactical brain of the emerging hero team.

Anthony Carrigan – Metamorpho

Known for: Barry (Emmy-nominated)Carrigan, beloved for his quirky villain roles, plays Rex Mason, a hero who can morph his body into various elements.Expect a weird, fun, visually inventive performance.

Trailers and Speculations

Various trailers released have been reaching record numbers of views and likes, demonstrating the audience's monstrous engagement with the new film, being the most watched trailer in DC history, surpassing The Batman. In these trailers, we could see the issue of Superman's interference in wars and political conflicts, something present in comics such as All-Stars and in the works written by Alex Ross. We also noticed that Lois and Clark have a well-developed relationship, where she already knows Kent's alter ego. Some criticism has arisen, treating Superman as "weak", since he appears to be getting beaten up a lot in the trailers hahaha. However, I believe that this will be better explained throughout the narrative.

The trailer is rich in references to the comics, from the "exotic" looks of Guy Gardner and Metamorpho, to the personalities of others, such as Lex Luthor and Superman himself. For me and many other fans, this is fundamental. In an era of characterization, recovering their meanings in this way is vital. The action sequences look good and rich in detail, demonstrating the powers of the hero and his enemies well. The plot promises to address the hero's moral and personal dilemmas in a serious way, since the film's edits cut a few minutes of humor, making it more dynamic and also more focused.

Recommended Comics
